NIGHT WETLAND SAFARI
ASTONISHING OCCURRENCES IN THE SHELTER OF DARKNESS
When the evening falls during the early summer nights, a hidden nature awakens at Cuchía wetlands. Dragonflies and a number of aquatic larvae creatures take advantage of both the safety of darkness and the warm temperatures to moult one last time, after several years growing underwater and getting ready for this unique event that will enable them to conquer the air. At daybreak their wings will be fully unfurled and dry and they will fly for the first time.
Iberian tree frogs and other amphibians are immersed in their mating frenzy, filling the night air with their roaring choirs. Night birds join the night symphony. European nightjars lie down on the warm floor, resting between feeding flights, while several bat species cross the air feasting on insects. Also night mammals explore looking for food.
In our quest for the newly risen Emperor dragonflies, we will dive into the darkness and its sounds, discovering an abundance of night-time creatures in their own environment.
